With their chieftain in chains, locked in a cage and on his long trip to Rome and execution, his defeated men are left to the vengeful Roman soldiers' attention.
Part of being defeated is the humiliation that follows and what more graphic way is there of shaming a man than by raping him. It strips way his manhood and establishes the rapist's power over him.
Here we see the defeated barbarian warriors being stripped naked before being "parcelled" out to the victorious Romans who can hardly wait to abuse their shapely arses.
The number of times the barbarians will be raped is open to conjecture. Suffice to say the Romans' blood lust is aroused and can only be satisfied by multiple raping.
Once Roman lust and the need for revenge is satisfied, the unfortunate captives will be sold "under the spear" to the slave-dealers who, like scavengers, always follow the Roman army albeit at a safe distance and sent to slave-markets throughout the Roman Empire.
Rome shows no mercy to those who challenge or defy her authority.
Artwork by Borg who, from time to time, worked with Baron of Prague to produce some magnificent art. My apologies to Madahv in wrongly attributing this work to him but I stand by my statement of him as another of my all-time favourite artists who captures his subjects so exquisitely; the words are mine.
Ave,
ReplyDeleteThis detail of a larger composition is by Borg, an Australian. It is not by Madahv sorry to say. Cheers, Madahv
